Propecia is currently the only FDA approved drug for treating hair loss in MEN ONLY.
Considered the most conservative drug approach for treating hair loss, Propecia has been
on market since 1997, hence why it gained so much popularity over the years.
Propecia works by blocking an enzyme called 5-alpha-reductase, which is used in the body to
convert testosterone (the male hormone) into a hormone called DHT (Dehydrotestosterone).
DHT is the hormone that is responsible for hair loss in those that are genetically predisposed
to it (those that are predisposed to Male Pattern Baldness).
DHT is also responsible for prostate enlargement and hence is also used for that
purpose under the brand name Proscar. By blocking the enzyme responsible for the conversion,
Propecia may stop hair loss and may even stimulate scalp hair growth for as long as it's used.
A summary of advantages that may be contributed to Propecia
Shrinking of the prostate, preventing prostate enlargement.
Stopping hair loss and growing new hair
Increased Testosterone levels (male hormone)
Prevention of dangerous prostate enlargement in athletes abusing drugs and steroids.

Proscar Some patients purchase Proscar and cut the tablets into 4 quarters to get roughly 1.25mg per dose which is much more cost effective than purchasing Propecia. However, if this is to be done, it can only be done in accordance with your doctor's permission and guidance. It is FDA approved for prostate issues only.
Avodart (Dutasteride) You may be interested in Avodart (dutasteride) which according to trials may be a much more potent drug for inhibiting DHT and may much grow more hair than Propecia (finasteride) does. However, Avodart is currently not FDA approved for treating hair loss, it's currentlyapproved for treating enlarged prostate conditions only.
