Avodart (dutasteride) is the newest most effective DHT (Dehydrotestosterone) inhibitor.
Avodart is used medically with great success for the treatment of prostate enlargement in men,
a condition known as BPH (Benign Prostate Hyperplasia).
Avodart reduces the risk of surgery and improves symptoms for men with enlarged prostate.

during testing of the medication that is known as Dutasteride (Avodart) for hair
loss treatment.
The pictures above are the outcome of the second phase
(Phase II) study which is required by the FDA for future drug's approval.

How does Avodart work ?
Avodart inhibits a hormone known as DHT (dihydrotestosterone).
DHT is the hormone that appears to cause hair loss (also known as MPB - Male Pattern Baldness) in most men.
DHT is also the main cause of prostate enlargement in many men (also known as BPH - Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia).
Avodart works by inhibiting the activities of two types of 5-alpha-reductase enzymes.
These enzymes are responsible in the body for converting Testosterone to Dihydrotestosterone(DHT).
Avodart lowers DHT levels substantially.
How come Avodart is much more effective than Propecia a hair loss and hair regrowth treatment?
Both Avodart (dutasteride) and Propecia (finasteride) work in a similar way,
lowering DHT hormone levels by inhibiting the enzyme 5-Alpha-Reductase which is
responsible for converting testosterone to DHT.
However, Avodart inhibits the action of two types of 5-alpha-reductase enzymes (type I and type II).
Propecia (Finasteride) only inhibits one type of the enzyme. So Avodart has two mode of actions vs. Propecia's just one.
Avodart has been shown to decrease levels of DHT
by about 30% more than Propecia (Finasteride).

The graph above shows that after 6 months of treatment,
hair count measured in a 1 inch diameter increased by
about 96 hairs with only 0.5mg of Dutasteride,
compared to only 72 hairs with 5mg Finasteride.
Note that in this case, only 0.5mg Dutasteride
(equal to one capsule of Avodart) outperformed 5mg of
Finasteride (equal to five capsules of Propecia!)

Is there any study on the effectiveness of Avodart (Dutasteride) for the treatment of enlarged prostate ?
A study was made on 2951 men suffering from BPH (Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia - An enlarged prostate condition)
with moderate to severe symptoms. They were treated with 0.5mg of Dutasteride (Avodart) daily.
The results showed a reduction of acute urinary retention by 57% and the risk reduction of benign
prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) related surgical intervention was down 48%.
The drug was found to be well tolerated.
It was concluded that Dutasteride is a potent inhibitor of dihydrotestosterone and is effective in
shrinking the prostate and reducing symptoms.
Does Avodart work for everyone ?
Avodart showed great effectiveness in treating prostate enlargement in men. It also
showed promising results as far as stopping hair loss and growing new hair.
There is never any promise that a certain medication will work for everyone,
same goes with Avodart as with any other medication.
Is Dutasteride Avodart safe for everyone?
You should never take any medication without your doctor's approval.

Common Uses
AVODART (dutasteride) is an androgen hormone inhibitor used in men to treat benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) which is swelling of the prostate. AVODART (dutasteride) works by lowering the amount of the hormone responsible for prostate growth. Dutasteride reduces urinary blockage and improves urine flow. AVODART (dutasteride) should not be used in women and children.
Before Using
Some medicines or medical conditions may interact with AVODART (dutasteride). INFORM YOUR DOCTOR OR PHARMACIST of all prescription and over-the-counter medicine that you are taking. Inform your doctor of any other medical conditions including liver disease, urinary tract disease, prostate cancer, or allergies. USE OF AVODART (dutasteride) IS NOT RECOMMENDED if you are female. Contact your doctor or pharmacist if you have any questions or concerns about using AVODART (dutasteride).
Directions
Follow the directions for using AVODART (dutasteride) provided by your doctor. AVODART (dutasteride) comes with a patient information leaflet. Read it carefully. Ask your doctor, nurse, or pharmacist any questions that you may have about AVODART (dutasteride). TAKE AVODART (dutasteride) at the same time each day. AVODART (dutasteride) may be taken on an empty stomach or with food. SWALLOW WHOLE. Do not break, crush, or chew before swallowing. STORE AVODART (dutasteride) at room temperature at 77 degrees F (25 degrees C) in a tightly-closed container, away from heat and light. Brief storage between 59 and 86 degrees F (15 to 30 degrees C) is permitted. Do not store in the bathroom. Dutasteride capsules may soften and leak if stored at high temperatures. If your capsules crack and leak, do not use them. Contact your pharmacist. If your skin comes in contact with the leaking capsules, wash the area immediately with soap and water. IF YOU MISS A DOSE OF AVODART (dutasteride) and you remember the same day, take it as soon as possible. If you do not remember until the next day, skip the missed dose and go back to your regular dosing schedule. Do not take 2 doses at once.
Cautions
IT MAY TAKE 3 TO 6 MONTHS for AVODART (dutasteride) to work. Do not stop taking AVODART (dutasteride) without checking with your doctor. KEEP ALL DOCTOR AND LABORATORY APPOINTMENTS while you are taking AVODART (dutasteride). AVODART (dutasteride) can affect the results of the blood test used to detect prostate cancer (PSA). Make sure laboratory personnel and your doctors know you use this drug. DO NOT DONATE BLOOD until at least 6 months after your last dose to prevent exposure through a blood transfusion to a pregnant woman. BEFORE YOU BEGIN TAKING ANY NEW MEDICINE, either prescription or over-the-counter, check with your doctor or pharmacist. AVODART (dutasteride) MAY BE ABSORBED THROUGH THE SKIN. ANY WOMAN WHO IS PREGNANT OR WHO MAY BECOME PREGNANT SHOULD NOT HANDLE crushed or broken capsules of AVODART (dutasteride). If a woman who is pregnant comes in contact with crushed or broken tablets of AVODART (dutasteride), contact your doctor as soon as possible. Any contact with AVODART (dutasteride) by a developing male fetus could result in abnormal male sex organ development. IT IS UNKNOWN IF AVODART (dutasteride) IS EXCRETED in breast milk. However, AVODART (dutasteride) should not be used in women.
Possible side effects
SIDE EFFECTS that may occur while taking AVODART (dutasteride) include a change in sexual function (e.g., impotence, decreased interest in sex, decrease in amount of ejaculate). These effects may go away as your body adjusts to the medicine. Breast tenderness or enlargement may also occur while you are taking AVODART (dutasteride). If these effects continue or are bothersome, check with your doctor. An allergic reaction to AVODART (dutasteride) is unlikely, but seek immediate medical attention if it occurs. Symptoms of an allergic reaction include rash, itching, swelling, dizziness, or trouble breathing. If you notice other effects not listed above, contact your doctor, nurse, or pharmacist.
If you take too much
If overdose is suspected, contact your local poison control center or emergency room immediately.
Additional information
DO NOT SHARE AVODART (dutasteride) with others for whom it was not prescribed. DO NOT USE AVODART (dutasteride) for other health conditions. KEEP AVODART (dutasteride) out of the reach of children and pets. IF USING AVODART (dutasteride) FOR AN EXTENDED PERIOD OF TIME, obtain refills before your supply runs out.
